The Closing Rider System

The Closing Rider System

A lot of our runs use the Closing Rider System. Each and every participant has a role to play, so please have a read below to see what is expected of everyone. If this isn't clear, or you have any questions, someone will be happy to explain it to you when you turn up. Just ask!
The system is comprised of three elements:
  1. Lead rider
  2. Following riders, who will also become markers
  3. Back marker
If you are thinking of coming for the first time, don't worry - you won't be asked to be the lead rider or the back marker! Make sure you know who they are before setting off and enjoy the ride!
Lead Rider

At the start of the run, the lead rider will make him/herself known to the group, tell you what he/she is riding to help you identify them on the run, tell you where the run will be going and give any other instructions they feel important. Please pay attention!
Following Riders / Markers

Ride at a pace that suits you - it is not a race, and it is OK to overtake other riders if their pace does not suit you.

NEVER OVERTAKE THE LEAD RIDER!

When you find yourself immediately behind the lead rider, it is then your turn to be the next marker. When the lead rider makes a turning, stop on the junction in a safe place whilst being as visible as possible to the following riders. If this means parking your bike up the road and walking back - then do so. Your own safety is the number one priority.

Your job is now to point all oncoming riders in the correct direction.
It is your responsibility to stay on the corner and do this job until the back marker comes along. Please try and be ready for the back marker as time spent waiting for people to put riding gear back on and get bikes started just spreads the group out and delays the run for everyone. It helps if you notice who was on the corners just before you as, when you see them arriving, you know the back marker will not be far behind.

Do not leave your position until signalled to do so by the back marker.
If one person abandons their role, the whole system fails!
Back Marker

The back marker will be aware of the final destination of the run.

In the event of a breakdown it is usual for one or more riders to stop to assist. The back marker himself will not become involved, as without the back marker in fairly close attendance the system breaks down. The only exception to this would be in the event of an accident.

Wherever possible the back marker will signal to the rider waiting at the junction to move off before he reaches him, otherwise it is up to the rider to overtake the back marker as soon as it is safe to do so.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Everyone doing their little bit always helps to make an enjoyable ride for all involved.
